Automatic PCP designation is expanding

October 8, 2026

Earlier this year, we launched a primary care provider (PCP) designation to select health plans. Having an established PCP helps members get faster access to high-quality primary care and lower out-of-pocket costs. We are expanding this benefit to Washington HDHP and Pathfinder Flexible small group plans at the end of October.

How PCPs were designated
To support an appropriate provider-member match, Premera considered several factors, including:

  • Existing PCP relationship
  • General proximity to the member’s home address
  • PCPs accepting new patients

Why primary care matters
Members with a PCP experience better health outcomes, lower total cost of care, and greater satisfaction with their health plan. A PCP can:

  • Personalize care based on the member’s need
  • Coordinate with specialists
  • Provide routine preventive care
  • Catch health issues early

Members will be notified of the change via email. They can view and change their designated PCP through the secure member website.
