Heritage Prime Network Sunsets for Commercial Groups in 2027
In August 2024, Premera Blue Cross announced it will close the Heritage Prime network to commercial groups effective January 1, 2027. Groups currently on plans utilizing the Heritage Prime network will need to shift to the Heritage PPO network no later January 1, 2026.
Why this is happening
Rising labor and supply costs and increasing administrative requirements have left providers unwilling to take a lower rate for the narrower network. To offset the lower rate for Heritage Prime, these same provider systems are asking for higher rates on the Heritage PPO network. This leads to higher premiums for your employer groups and an even more narrow network.
Impact to associations and other plans
- Blue High Performance NetworkSM (BlueHPN and BlueHPN HSA) plans will remain on the Heritage Prime network.
- Heritage Prime network access will end for association business on December 31, 2026. Groups with a January 1, 2026 renewal date will be the last group able to renew with Heritage Prime as part of their health plan.
What happens next
By refocusing our efforts, we can work to make other products and networks more cost efficient and effective. Premera will continue to work with providers to build strong relationships to improve our networks and keep costs fair for our providers, employer groups, and our members.
